This unit will focus on the unique linguistic and artistic practices of Borneo's indigenous and non-indigenous communities. Language differences, similarities and uses amongst and between various ethnic groups, societies and cultures will be explored to enable a better understanding of the complexity of identifying the origins and boundaries of languages and dialects in order to subsequently investigate the extent and impact of lingua franca (such as Malay and Iban) as an outcome of modernisation and industrialisation in Borneo.
